Make the ACT–NSW distinction explicit
For a tenancy, property or local dispute, identify the address and the jurisdiction shown on any notice. If ACAT or another body is involved, keep its correspondence with the underlying agreement. Ask the office whether it handles that forum and whether another jurisdiction requires separate advice or representation.
Plan access, travel and the first appointment
Legal Aid ACT publishes local legal-help information and pathways. Ask about the actual assistance available, the appointment format and any eligibility requirements. If you work interstate or cannot attend during ordinary hours, ask the chosen provider about practical arrangements without assuming a public Canberra address guarantees a walk-in service.
Compare the first stage of work
Ask each office to price the same task: an initial appointment, review of identified documents, a response or attendance. Confirm who performs the work, what is excluded and whether outside expenses or travel are additional. If there is a formal date, give it before booking and obtain confirmation of who is responsible for the next action.
