Unpack the words

If a word gets in the way, ask.

These short explanations help with a first conversation. Ask the provider what a term means in your particular arrangement.

Initial enquiry

A first request to find out whether an office may be able to help. It is not, by itself, an agreement that the provider will act.

Scope of help

The particular work a provider agrees to do. Ask what is included, what is excluded and whether further work requires a separate agreement.

Response date

A date mentioned in a notice or correspondence. Ask an adviser what it means; this website does not calculate deadlines or decide whether the date is legally binding.

Secure channel

A way of sending information that you have checked with the intended recipient. An email address or form in a directory is not a guarantee about security or confidentiality.

Jurisdiction

The relevant legal system, place or decision-making body for an issue. The nearest office is not automatically the right provider for every jurisdiction.

Representation

Acting for someone in agreed dealings or proceedings. It is different from giving one-off advice, and rules about who may appear vary by forum.

Read-back

Repeating the agreed next step in your own words so the other person can correct misunderstandings about responsibility, cost or timing.

Time limit

A period within which a step may need to be taken. The applicable limit depends on the process and circumstances; an unanswered enquiry does not stop it.
