By Talk to a Lawyer · Published 20 September 2026 · General preparation information

Begin with the next police, court or response date and the place where the matter is being handled. An office needs that information before it can assess availability. Keep the actual documents close to hand, including any conditions or orders. These guides help organise an enquiry; they do not assess a charge, decide what you should say to police or replace urgent advice.

Three distinctions to make first

Decision 01

Advice now or representation at a listed event?

Explain whether you need immediate advice, preparation for an appearance or help after a decision. Give the specific date and court or station. An enquiry or appointment request does not confirm that a lawyer has accepted responsibility for attending.

Decision 02

Which documents explain the current position?

Gather the charge or notice, court paperwork and current orders or conditions. Preserve originals and provide copies as requested through a secure channel. Ask which other records are needed rather than trying to decide for yourself what will be relevant evidence.

Decision 03

What stage does the fee cover?

A quote for one appearance may not include a contested hearing, reports, counsel, travel or an appeal. Ask who will attend and how later stages are authorised. Enquire about legal aid or other assistance without assuming eligibility or availability.

Prepare for a useful appointment

A preparation aid, not confirmation that a legal requirement is complete.

Compare the work, not just the price

Tell the office the next police, court or response date before arranging a routine appointment. Compare quotes for the same stage and confirm who will actually attend. A fee for one appearance may not include an evidence review, a later hearing or an appeal. Ask about legal aid or other assistance where relevant and obtain clear confirmation that the lawyer has accepted the work.

Immediate advice
Confirm availability for the relevant location and time, how confidential instructions are taken and which current orders or conditions must be supplied first.
Preparation
Ask what records will be reviewed, whether further material is needed and how advice will be explained before you make a procedural or plea decision.
Attendance and later stages
Clarify the specific appearance covered, possible additional attendances, counsel and travel costs, and who communicates the outcome and next obligations.

Leave with an agreed next step

Confirm the next action, the documents the office still needs and how you will receive advice. If an appearance is involved, ask when and where to meet and what happens if the assigned lawyer changes. Keep the written engagement and current court documents together.
